Hey kids…Here’s the details on this week!

Games are on! PLEASE WATCH THE MUD IN THE Parking Lot. Do not drive your cars through the ditch. Use the driveway approaches in order to get to the parking on the grass.

Food this week: Food this week are pre-made ham, turkey, and roast beef croissants and also turkey & swiss wraps. The vegetarian option, and only for vegetarians, are vege-burrito’s. There will also be asst. chips and crisps.

Speeding through the Parking Lot is a no-no – First time we catch you is a verbal warning. Second is bye-bye for the following week.

Dogs on leashes – 1st is a warning, second is your dog doesn’t come out, third is you don’t come out.

Shirts – Please arrive early to get your shirt if you haven’t picked it up yet. Check with your captains to see if they picked up your shirts. If you haven’t paid, no shirt. (And you shouldn’t be playing.”

Informal Beginner’s Clinics – We still have experienced players showing up early to help you out. If you get to the fields by 11, there will be someone to work on throws and game knowledge with. Take advantage of elite (and some good “coaches”) giving up their time to get you good at disc!

Unpaid – If for some reason ya haven’t paid, ya need to get that fixed, ASAP. WL accepts Cash, Check or CC and will have staff available to take payment prior to games on Saturday.

Rain checking – Game is on. Game is on.

Car Pool – If you’re interested in car pooling, please join the DWL Car Pool Organizing Board group on Facebook.

There are a number of unique skills (and a ton of jargon) that are specific to ultimate frisbee. Becoming familiar with them will help you understand and enjoy Winter League to its fullest. We can help with that. Read the full post to find out how to avoid long lines to get your disc AND learn how to use that disc.

Experienced recreational and competitive players are volunteering their time to help you not only learn the language, but also learn some of the skills and tools that will make you a force on the field. (Being a force off the field is a completely independent skillset. See Glenn and Alex for diagrams.)

Details: Winter League Beginner’s ClinicTime: 11 a.m. on 12/10 and 12/17
Who: All new players and those that need a refresher. Experienced players welcomed to assist in the clinic
What else: For those participating in the beginners clinic, we’ll have expedited WL check-in on Week 1 starting at 10:30 a.m.

If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering, please contact dwl (at) dallasultimate (dot) com, so that we can help out. Look forward to seeing you all out there!

Get me registered

We’re using the same registration site as years past, so go to Dallaswinterleague.com, fill out the registration form and BOOM! you’re signed up. You’ll be receiving a site reminder for your login shortly. See the FAQ for full registration instructions. Pricing will remain the same as last year: $70 for returning players/$65 for new players. Registration is open 10/28 – 11/28. There is no late registration!! The theme for Winter League 2012 is “Prehistory” (Think dinosaurs, cavemen, etc.)

PAIRING POLICY: Recreational players are allowed a 1:1 pairing for Winter League. If Rick pairs with Dave, Dave can’t pair Tim. Period. If you have a pairing question, please direct these to the Winter League Poobahs, Alex Lepe – slepe7 at yahoo.com or Glenn Burr – glenn_burr at hotmail.com Use the Pairings page to designate your general pairing (Note: This includes pairings for parents who need to care for small children). Rookie league players should note if they would like to be on the team with the player that recruited them in the COMMENTS portion of the registration. We’ll try to accommodate as best as we can. THE ONLY GUARANTEED PAIRINGS ARE THE ONES THAT ARE REGISTERED THROUGH THE SITE. Competitive pairings are limited to those needed to accommodate for caring for small children.

I want to make sure I get on a team I like: Use the COMMENTS section on the registration site. If you have little kids that you don’t want around alcohol as much, tell us! If you act like a little kid after some alcohol, tell us! Want a party team? More competitive? Willing to dress in, um, dresses for no reason? Tell us!

Where and when are we playing?

We’ll be returning to Oak Point/Prestonwood Polo Club for Winter League this year. Map and Directions

The drafts will be on: Nov. 30 (Rec) and Dec. 1 (Comp.)

The regular season will play on the following dates: 12/10 (Kick-off party on 12/9), 12/17, (Holiday break), 1/7, 1/14, 1/21 (Mid-season HH on 1/20), 1/28, 2/4, 2/11, (Mardi Gras break) and 2/25. The Tournament will be all day on March 3 (End of Season party on that night.

Put your hands down, we’ll answer the question…Right here…

Why can’t we go back to the old fields?

The Las Colinas Polo fields are not available for lease because of a myriad of legal and administrative issues that are not the domain of the Dallas Ultimate Association (DUA). Until those issues are resolved, those fields are 100% unavailable for Winter League use. It’s unfortunate, but it’s genuinely beyond our control.

What’s new with Dallas Winter League?

Jerseys: Cotton t-shirts are out, performance jerseys are in. What does this add to your cost? Nothing. Because the Dallas Ultimate Association (DUA) is working hard with your money to get you the best WL experience possible. To guarantee that each player receives an appropriate size jersey (no more tiny women in Large t-shirts!), they won’t be available until the first week of play in 2012.

Field amenities: The Prestonwood Polo Club has been hard at work improving the conditions of all of their fields to offer you the best single-site fields in North Texas. No “parking lot” fields, no more sand filler and new field space so we can have FULL-SIZE fields.

Beginner clinics: Got no throws? No idea where to go? We can help. Veteran players are volunteering their Saturday mornings to help get beginners more familiar with the strategies, skills and knowledge that go along with being an ultimate player. Be on the lookout for additional information about specific times and places to meet up to get moving toward having mad disc skills.

Your Poobahs: They’re just two guys making sure you’re having a good time. Glenn Burr will be joining Alex Lepe as Winter League Co-Poobah for this season. So when you want to yell at someone about something, instead of directing it toward unsuspecting parties, we’ll be happy to stare at you blankly until you’re all wore out and then resolve it for you.

New contact information: Got a question? Want to volunteer? Concern? Comment? Etc? Send it to dwl@dallasultimate.org. We have multiple people on that address to help you get answers as fast as possible.

Call for Captains

Want a say over who’s on your team? Want to help new players learn the game and old players continue to enjoy it? Become a Captain! If you’re interested in Captaining for either the competitive or recreational divisions, please send a note with you and your co-captain’s name to dwl@dallasultimate.org. Don’t have a co-captain? We’ll do our best to find you one. Send a note to the address above so we can get to making it happen.

Call for Volunteers

While the Dallas Ultimate Association (DUA) handles a majority of the administrative side of Winter League, it’s the additional volunteers who make this the best league experience in North Texas. We need your hands to help us manage set-up, food, registration, field painting, trash, etc. Send us a note at dwl@dallasultimate.org and tell us how you’d be willing to help and receive our biggest gratitude!

Sponsors

Winter League is filled with more than 450 home buyers, consumers, investors, families, “athletes”, professionals and more that your company should be involved with and know more about. As a tight knit and passionate group, ultimate players are known for sharing their consumer experiences with friends and family. If you’d like to be a sponsor for Winter League or know someone who you think would benefit from coming aboard, email us at dwl@dallasultimate.org and we’ll connect them to our sponsorship director.

Who the @#$@ is the Dallas Ultimate Association?

You’ve heard us mention the Dallas Ultimate Association quite a bit. The DUA is a not-for-profit association led by a group of folks who are passionate about bringing the health, sportsmanship and other benefits of the game of ultimate to the Metroplex. The DUA actively supports Texas2Finger Ultimate Tournament, Winter League, Youth and Collegiate ultimate in North Texas. Some of the names and faces you’ll see often around Winter League include: Tom Richardson, Jason Mechler, JJ Jordan, Kristen Corpuz , Casey Hogg and others. If you meet them, ask about the DUA and what it’s been doing lately.

Poobah’s Pub

Just a place for miscellaneous and random items that we didn’t think needed their own section…

To play as a true co-ed league, we always need more female players. We’ll work our hardest to get new women enjoying the game, but we need you to bring along coworkers, friends, etc. and give them a chance to experience the fun.

The combined weight of the Poobahs is almost 400 lbs. Neither of them are over 5’ 10”. Feel free to run them in the cup to get them exercise.

Check out Everything Ultimate on YouTube for great clips to share with friends who don’t know what Ultimate is all about.

You, you got what I need. But you say he’s just a friend…But you say he’s just a friend….

There have been some late-breaking changes to our parking situation. It is going to be very difficult if people do not carpool. Please read the details below from Tom to make sure you are not walking an extra mile to get to the fields!

Email Tom if you are willing to volunteer your minivan for shuttle service.

That field next to the parking lot, which has served us as our main parking area for the past umpteen Winterleagues is now gone. Goodbye, so long, gone forever. On Monday construction crews came in and finally tore it all to h-e-double hockeysticks.

This puts us in a bit of a pickle. I have updated the map to reflect the new parking areas.

That brings us to the following points:

Please carpool. Players that carpool (more than one person in the car) will get to park at the areas closest to the field (turn in off of royal, parking in the gravel under the bridge). People parking in these areas MUST DRIVE SLOW AND TURN OFF ALL MUSIC while in the stables area. NO EXCEPTIONS. The last thing we want to do is spook a horse with a minivan doing it’s best Dukes of Hazzard impression. Parking is limited, so when it is full we will be coning off the bridge and posting signs on both Royal and Riverside to continue on to the standard Riverside parking.

Please do not park at the police station. We will park, as we normally do, in the parking lot off of riverside. However, there is a big penalty for showing up late. When the riverside lot is full, players will need to park in the overflow lot, further down Riverside.

The overflow lot is a brisk 5000ft walk to the fields. For you math wizards, that is 280 feet less than a mile. Up until the start of games we will try to find a volunteer with a van to shuttle people back and forth, but if you are late and the shuttle has quit running, you are, as we say, sh*t out of luck.

We need to find the aforementioned volunteer. Do you have a van that you would let one of our injured players drive as the shuttle? Would you be willing to both be the volunteer and the shuttle? Either way, let me know and I can promise my undying gratitude.

We are working diligently on trying to come up with other solutions, but right now this is the best we can do.

Also, please remember to bring a dark shirt and a white shirt, and your checkbook if you haven’t paid.

To pay via check, just bring it with it on Saturday. If you haven’t already mailed it, there’s a good chance of it not being received and processed in time.

You can check your payment status on the Rosters page. There will be a note at the top that indicates the last time payment status was updated.
